Navigating the world with my inter-racial, inter-cultural family
Attachment Parenting: is a parenting philosophy based on the principles of attachment theory in developmental psychology. Coined “Attachment Parenting” by Dr. William Sears, it works in theory, to nurture and maintain a strong emotional bond with parents during childhood, also known as a “secure attachment”. This secure attachment is a precursor of secure, empathic relationships in adulthood.
Interracial: Interracial relates to marriages, relationships, or blending between different races. Also refers to the mix of two people of different ethnicities. Interracial children are the product of parents from different races or ethnicities.
Inter-Cultural: relating, involving, or representing different cultures. Inter-cultural children are the product of parents from different cultures.
Irie: to be at total peace with your current state of being. The way you feel when you have no worries.
One Love: One love refers to the universal love and respect expressed by all people for all people, regardless of race, creed, or color. The phrase comes from Rasta culture and most specifically Bob Marley’s music. “One Love” is a song by Bob Marley & The Wailers from their 1977 album Exodus. It has also been included in many of their compilation albums. It is a classic, well known reggae song which expressed Marley’s views on Global Unity.
Pollyanna: A person regarded as being foolishly or blindly optimistic.
Racism: “Racism, by its simplest definition, is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. People with racist beliefs might hate certain groups of people according to their racial groups.” Wikipedia
West Indian: In the English-speaking Caribbean, someone from the Caribbean is usually referred to as a “West Indian,” although the phrase “Caribbean person” is sometimes used.
White Privilege : the unearned advantages one gains and takes for granted by having white skin.
more to come….
I am a white woman, mother of two, married to a man from the Eastern Caribbean. I work to understand my whiteness everyday; and though I am a bit of a Pollyanna, I hope you find substance in my writing. I welcome your comments.
